SPCA Volunteer Lori Hamilton, owner of the Miles Gallery in Summerville, won third place in the Post and Courier and Coastal Community Foundation's "Thanks for Giving" Essay Contest. The SPCA will now receive a $500 donation thanks to Mrs. Hamilton's winning essay. Mrs. Hamilton and her family have adopted three dogs from the SPCA. CLICK HERE to read her essay.

Volunteer Program: The shelter is excited about the efforts of a dedicated handful of volunteers who have made a difference this year with so many of our pets. In 2010, Cheryl Bruns, Volunteer Coordinator, has worked very hard in putting together an orientation program, a manual and having several training sessions for those who are interested in making a difference. She feels that we are moving in a direction that helps the animals in the most positive way...thanks to these volunteers. Because of their efforts, animals that have been waiting a long to be adopted & are being placed due to one on one time and socialization. We want our volunteers to spend quality time with both the cats and the dogs on a regular basis...MANY don't make it out of their pens on a weekly basis! These adult volunteers hold, pet, groom, talk to, play with and learn everything they can about the animals while teaching them basic commands and boosting their confidence. We do our best in spending additional time with those that are shy and linger in the back of their pens- these animals need us the most...PLEASE make a difference and volunteer your time...we will work around your schedule and Cheryl and the Shelter Staff will assist in giving you an orientation. Fundraisers: We also need folks to come out and help us with our Fundraisers. We always need help getting set up, running our booth, or just coming out and helping to hand out information to the public.
Meet and Greet: Help our shelter dogs and fosters put their best paw forward. We have scheduled events, normally on week-ends at various Pet friendly places in Summerville.
